Other functions: In the traditional food culture of our country, some Chinese medicinal materials are often widely eaten as food materials among the people, that is, substances that are both food and Chinese medicinal materials (instant medicinal substances) according to tradition. According to the documents issued by the National Health Commission and the State Administration for Market Regulation, lobelia can be used as both medicine and food within a limited range of use and dosage.

The commonly used medicinal recipes of lobelia are as follows:
       lobelia tea
Lobelia 25 grams, sugar 20 grams. Wash the lobelia and cut it into 5 cm sections. Put the lobelia into the stewing cup and add 250ml of water. Bring to a boil on high heat, then simmer for 25 minutes and serve.
How to eat: 2 times a day, 100ml each time.

       The role of lobelia:
       1. Diuretic effect
Anesthetized dog IV lobelia infusion 0.1g/kg or lobelia total alkaloids 6.6mg/kg, normal rat ig1g/kg, and normal human po lobelia powder 10-30g, all have significant and lasting diuretic effect, Chloride excretion in urine also increased significantly. The inulin isolated from lobelia can inhibit diuresis when given po or ip to rats.
       2. The effect on the nervous system
The effect of lobelialine on the nervous system is similar to that of nicotine, but its strength is only 1/5-1/20 of that of nicotine. Muscle junctions, as well as chemoreceptors in the carotid and aortic bodies, are first excitatory and then inhibitory.
       3. Inhibitory effect on the central nervous system
The succinic acid contained in this product can protect animals against hyperbaric oxygen, electric shock and audiogenic convulsions when administered ip to mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats and dogs. The hot plate method has analgesic effect, has synergistic effect with pentobarbital sodium, and has sedative and hypothermic effects.
       4. Exciting effect of breathing
Lobelia decoction and its alkaloid preparation iv have significant respiratory stimulation effects on anesthetized dogs. Its effect is strengthened and prolonged with increasing dose. Excessive doses can cause respiratory paralysis and death. After removing the sinus nerve or removing the carotid body, and then injecting the lobelia preparation, there is no obvious respiratory stimulation. It shows that its mechanism of action is mainly through stimulating the carotid body chemoreceptors, which reflexively excites the respiratory center. Lobelialine has a good excitatory effect on respiratory depression caused by morphine, but is less effective on those caused by urethane and chloral hydrate. Lobelialine inhalation has the effect of dilating the bronchi and can resist the constriction of the airways caused by pilocarpine and acetylcholine.
       5. The effect on the cardiovascular system
Lobelia infusion iv has significant and long-lasting hypotensive effect on anesthetized dogs. For example, duodenal administration requires 10-20 times the amount of intravenous administration to be effective. It has also been reported that a small amount of iv decoction has a short-term boosting effect, and a larger dose has a longer-lasting antihypertensive effect. Lobelia alkaloids have excitatory effects on isolated rabbit hearts and frog hearts, which strengthen the contraction force and increase the amplitude; when the concentration is high, there will be temporary excitement, followed by inhibition, and finally conduction block and arrest. Lobelialine im, while breathing is excited, the heart rate slows down and blood pressure rises; in large doses, the heart rate speeds up, blood pressure drops significantly, and finally causes heart paralysis.
       6. Choleretic effect
Lobelia boiled and alcohol-precipitated preparation 1g (crude drug)/kg, bile flow increased by more than 2 times compared with before administration, and the effect reached the peak after 50 minutes of administration, but the concentration of solids, bile salts and bilirubin in bile have been reduced.
       7. Anti-venom effect
Lobelia preparation, and sodium succinate, sodium fumarate, and sodium p-hydroxybenzoate isolated from it were administered po 30 minutes before the injection of snake venom, or SC drugs were injected at the same time as snake venom, or compounded with sodium succinate, sodium fumarate, and sodium acetate 30 minutes-4hpo before the injection of snake venom, it has a higher protective effect on mice injected with the minimum lethal dose of cobra venom, and the protection rate is 59.1-93.1%. However, if the drug is administered 25 minutes after the injection of snake venom, there is no protective effect.
       8. Anti-ulcer effect
The succinic acid contained in this product is 50mg/kg, which can resist the gastric ulcer caused by pyloric ligation in rats. Lobelialine in cats and dogs im has an emetic effect.
       9. Laxative effect
Lobelia decoction po has a laxative effect and can suppress appetite.
       10. Antibacterial effect
In vitro tests, Lobelia decoction has obvious inhibitory effect on common pathogenic fungi. It also has inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
       11. Blood coagulation
Ip administration can shorten the bleeding time of tail docking in mice.
       12. Anticancer effect
When the concentration of lobelialine is 15mcg/ml, it can inhibit the uptake of oxygen by mouse ascites cancer cells.
