    Tongcao, the name of traditional Chinese medicine. Alias Akebia tree, Tianmazi, Datong grass. It is the dried stem pith of Araliaceae plant Tetrapanax papyrifer (Hook.) K. Koch. Cut the stems in autumn, cut them into sections, take out the pith while they are fresh, straighten them, and dry them in the sun. Evergreen shrubs or small trees, 1-3.5 meters high, 6-9 cm in diameter at the base; bark dark brown, slightly wrinkled; new branches light brown or light yellowish brown, with obvious leaf scars and large lenticels, young Thick yellow stellate hairs grow densely from time to time, and the back hairs gradually fall off.

      Economy: Tongtuo wood has a large stem pith, light and soft texture, and white color, which is called "Tongcao". Surgical dressings and watercolor paper can be made. Tongtuo wood is also the raw material for making summer herbal tea in various provinces (regions) in South China. "Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Handbook" records that Tongcao papermaking originated in the early Qing Daoguang period. Chen Kuozui, a native of Quanzhou, Fujian, who was farming in Hsinchu, discovered Tongcao shrubs. He took the pith of Tongcao and cut it into paper flowers for use as paper. By the 1820s, a large number of them were exported to the international market, most of which were in Europe, America and Japan.
       Medicinal use: Tongcao is used as a diuretic in traditional Chinese medicine, and has a cooling and cooling effect. Tongtuo wood is used as medicine with stem pith, which mainly contains inositol, polysaccharides, vitamin A, metal elements and amino acids. Nature and flavor are sweet, light, slightly cold. Heat-clearing and diuretic, ventilating and breastfeeding. It is used for damp-heat red urine, gonorrhea astringent pain, edema, oliguria, and milk retention.        Ecology: Tongtuo wood has strong vitality and can be derived by itself, but leaves will fall in winter. It is suitable to be planted under the big trees on both sides of the road and on the edge of the garden, which can suppress the growth of weeds and reduce soil erosion.
