Sophora flavescens Aiton, a perennial subshrub of the family Fabaceae Sophora, 1-2 meters high. Stems erect and multi-branched; leaves ovate-lanceolate, back densely pilose; raceme terminal, corolla yellow-white, flag petals ovate-spoon-shaped; fruit cylindrical, beaded; seeds brown oblate; flowering period 6- July, fruiting period July-September. "Compendium of Materia Medica" records the origin of the name of Sophora flavescens: "Bitter is like the name of taste, ginseng is named for merit, and locust tree is named for the shape of leaves."
       Sophora flavescens, native to China, is distributed all over the country except Qinghai and Xinjiang, and is also distributed in India, Japan, North Korea, and Russia. Commonly found on hillsides, sandy grassy slopes, shrubs, or near fields. Sophora flavescens likes warm and dry climate, is resistant to cold and high temperature, likes fertilizer and fears waterlogging, and tolerates saline-alkali sandy soil. The main propagation methods are seeding and root division. According to "Shen Nong's Materia Medica": "Sophora flavescens tastes bitter and cold, and can treat confidant qi stagnation, abdominal pain, accumulation, jaundice, drowning sputum, water removal, carbuncle, and can nourish the middle and improve eyesight and stop tears." Modern pharmacological studies have proved that Sophora flavescens contains matrine, which has inhibitory effects on various skin fungi and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Sophora flavescens root contains matrine and cytisine, etc. It is used as medicine to clear away heat and dampness, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, invigorate the stomach and expel insects. It is often used to treat skin itching, neurasthenia, indigestion and constipation.
